Many relocated the positions of altars, which would usually be situated at the top of the cross-shaped church, to the centre of the building. In Russia, these standardized complexes were referred to as "Panelki" ('panel buildings') as they were composed of prefabricated concrete panels - unfortunately, they became known for their shoddy and sometimes never completed amenities. Brutalism emerged following the end of World War II, originally spanning from the United Kingdom and Europe before spreading to other parts of the world. At the time, there were multiple overlapping events and philosophies that contributed to the emergence of Brutalist structures.

McGregor Smith also described that modernist and brutalist churches exhibited a move away from traditional forms of religious symbolism in decorative elements, and instead used the material and shape of the building to recall the same feelings. Many examples of Brutalist architecture still stand in the United States, including the Litchfield Towers constructed in Pittsburgh in 1963 with a cylindrical design for three 22-story residential housing towers for 2,000 students at the University of Pittsburgh. It was designed by the architecture firm Deeter and Richtie and serves as the main residence for students at the university.

"Although narrow, the shuttered windows create depth and volume providing a calming soft light that hints at the vastness of space beyond its walls." "This departure from traditional symbolism shifted creative expression away from supernatural narratives of heaven and hell, embracing instead earthly qualities of materiality," McGregor Smith added. "In response to the reformed liturgy following the Second Vatican Council, church commissioners were granted unprecedented freedom to depart from traditional church typology," McGregor Smith continued. "I felt a sense of excitement and purpose in rediscovering these hidden gems that so freely express creativity," he continued. "These architectural marvels evoke within me a profound sense of awe and curiosity, thanks to the architects' masterful use of form and light." Chilean architects Umberto Bonomo and Felipe Alarcón constructed this property using cinder blocks, which were easy to transport and assemble on the remote coastal location.

These elements are also found in renovations of older Brutalist buildings, such as the redevelopment of Sheffield's Park Hill. In 2022, Waytkus wrote that the demolition of Breuer's Geller I house should be a wake-up call to protect modern buildings, which was followed up by Docomomo's selection of 11 significant 20th-century buildings at risk of demolition in the US. Unprotected modernist houses are at risk of demolition as land often holds greater value than architectural heritage, says conservation group Docomomo US in response to actor Chris Pratt tearing down a home by architect Craig Ellwood. Brutalist buildings are popular locations in films and television series about urban dystopias. More noted examples of Brutalist architecture, like George Chakhaba and Zurab Jalaghania's Georgia Ministry of Highways (1971), combined the use of raw concrete and unfinished surfaces with the influence of Constructivism. In Yugoslavia, Božidar Janković lwas the leader of an architectural school emphasizing functionalism and the use of raw concrete, while in other countries, including Czechoslovakia, Brutalism was seen as a way to create a national style that reflected modern socialism. Paul Rudolph was considered the leading Brutalist architect in the USA, and as a professor of architecture at Yale both his theory and practice influenced subsequent architects.
Brutalism also suits building functions requiring flexibility and durability, like live-work spaces. Lastly, the digitally enabled parametric design allows the modeling of complex brutalist volumes optimized for site conditions, use, and aesthetics. Rather than reviving mid-century brutalism, architects can deploy its modular construction, honest use of concrete, expressive volumes, and sensitive integration of form and function to meet today’s needs while retaining a bold, contemporary aesthetic. Le Corbusier was the brutalist architecture movement’s most influential and iconic architect.
A love of Brutalist architecture doesn’t mean you must forgo curvaceous outlines. This modern home exterior can’t easily be remodeled or changed, so it will remain as the architect intended. The feeling of permanence that Brutalism brings is beautiful in our fast-paced, quick-changing, and disposable modern culture.
Another famous example of Brutalist design is Boston City Hall, which follows the style inside and out with its intricate concrete construction on a large scale. On the campus of University of California San Diego sits the stunning Geisel Library, which is easily identifiable as a Brutalist building. Constructed predominantly of concrete, the building contains tiers of floor-to-ceiling windows. Stepping up close to the library, you feel the looming presence Brutalist buildings can evoke. "The Barbican Centre in London is an excellent example of Brutalism in practice," says Rogers of the performing arts space.
His pioneering work, like the Unité d’Habitation apartment complex in Marseille, France, built in 1952, is considered the beginning of brutalist architecture, using raw, unfinished concrete, modular design, and expressive sculptural forms. Le Corbusier’s buildings embodied the core tenets of brutalism, focusing on functionality and rejecting unnecessary decoration. Other notable brutalist architects like Alison and Peter Smithson in the UK and Paul Rudolph in the US further developed the style in the 1950s and 60s. Le Corbusier first demonstrated the radical creative possibilities of rough concrete, open floor plans, and the blunt, geometric aesthetic that became hallmarks of brutalism. Le Corbusier’s influence shaped the widespread adoption of brutalist architecture for civic and residential buildings in the postwar period.
To this end, the style and trait were maintained, but everything else was reconsidered. With only four supporting pillars, the plan has two floors and a large concrete structure with rod-bound roof slabs, which makes the house move up to two centimeters a day, depending on the ambient temperature. This movement was the starting point for the entire intervention project, as the materials had to be prepared for any expansion, without forming cracks or fissures.
Brutalism’s inexpensive concrete construction and functionalist ethos were well-suited to this task. Brutalism also became closely linked to socialist ideals and egalitarian goals, which architects sought to promote through design. Many governments embraced brutalist civic buildings and housing estates as symbols of the welfare state. However, this socialist association later contributed to brutalism’s decline. Brutalists rejected the decorative purity of modernism’s International Style.
The Smithsons' friend Eduardo Paolozzi was also in contact with the French artist Jean Dubuffet, and Peter Smithson noted that at the core of Brutalism was "the materiality thing" originating in Dubuffet's Art Brut. Dubuffet coined the term "Art Brut" to define art created outside of the established art-world, notably by self-taught artists, children, and the mentally ill. His own work was known for its often-shocking emphasis on the brute physicality of the body, and its use of raw textures and primitive formal likenesses. The Parallel of Life and Art exhibition included one of Dubuffet's works from his Corps de Dames series ( ) as well as prints, photographs, video, architectural designs, and artwork by Richard Hamilton, William Turnbull, Magda Cordell, and Jean Dubuffet. The exhibition was later regarded as an authoritative illustration not only of the Brutalist movement but of early trends in the emerging British Pop Art movement. Located in Montreal, Habitat 67, an apartment complex by Moshe Safdie, originated as the Israeli Canadian architect’s master’s thesis during his time studying at McGill University.
